Meet the Artist
Rita is a Chilean artist and jewelry designer who has gained international acclaim for her innovative use of ancient micro basketry techniques in crafting woven jewelry from horsehair. Introduced to traditional jewelry by her father, Rita perfected her craft through apprenticeships with two master artisans in Rari, the Southern Chilean community where the matrilineal tradition originated.
Historically, basketry focused on utilitarian items like baskets and nests, rooted in the animal world. Rita, however, transforms this ancient tradition into jewelry, considering her practice part of an ancestral lineage with South American native peoples. Her work explores applying their worldview to modern life, offering a contemporary take on the historic craft.
Rita's creations are deeply tied to a feminine, motherly, and primordial aesthetic. Her pieces resemble containers and shelters reminiscent of supportive uteri and nests, characterized by a stylish and curved design. Viewing weaving as a cyclical ancestral gesture, Rita sees it as a connection to the past that inspires new futures.
She views her horsehair micro basketry as a delicate craft brimming with possibilities. Through her exploration of this unique material, Rita aims to establish a personalized knowledge transfer, inviting others to delve into the intricate beauty of her art.
