Why do so many fast food restaurants use orange in their brand? What do the colors of the national flag of Ireland stand for? Why is the Virgin Mary always depicted in blue? Our reaction to color is instantaneous - we make unconscious connections between color and culture, society, media saturation - and, of course, feelings about color can be deeply personal and are often rooted in our own experiences or associations.

Join VAWAA Artist and fine artist Clarissa on Sunday, July 12, at 12 PM EDT, for a fun talk and introduction to the meanings behind color - to convey narrative and cultural significance. Using global culture, pop culture, art history and film as subjects, we'll examine several color systems, noting their meanings and applied uses as visual language. No prior experience required, all levels welcome!

About Clarissa

Clarissa is a synesthete and an encaustic artist - a method of painting with molten tinted wax and resin. She studied at one of the oldest art schools in the country, and her work appears in both private and public collections. You may have seen Clarissa’s work before without even realizing it. She has been a scenic artist with over 40 credits in film and television, including creating Lee Krasner paintings in the film Pollock. Over the years, she created sets varying from burned out buildings to gilded ballrooms, reproductions of master paintings for films to original artwork for film characters. She brings her love of narrative imagery into her paintings, with a fusion of historical portraiture, film and pop culture influences. Clarissa spends her time working with arts organizations, in her studio painting, at historic or music events, at any of Philly’s museums or historic sites. She’s an avid film lover, history buff, and lately, accordion student.
