United States > > > with Mauricio in Uruguay

I chose to go on a VAWAA because it offered the opportunity to do something different for my birthday while experiencing a new country. I had never done woodworking before, so I arrived with very few expectations. I’m not naturally creative when working with my hands, so I simply hoped I might learn a little something. What I experienced with Mauricio, however, was truly exceptional and far beyond anything I could have imagined. Not only did he patiently guide me through the process of woodworking, but he also shared so much more. Through our time together, I learned about Uruguay, its culture, and the rhythms of everyday life there.

What began as a simple creative experience became something much deeper—an opportunity to learn, connect, and see a new place through the eyes of someone who cares deeply about his craft and his culture. It made my birthday unforgettable.

I had thought about trying woodworking before, especially when I come across interesting pieces of wood that just need a little care or restoration. The skills Mauricio taught me have given me the confidence to approach those projects in the future.

Beyond woodworking, Mauricio shared so much more. He introduced me to aspects of Uruguayan culture and also helped me practice and improve my Spanish. What made the experience so special was that it wasn’t just about learning a craft—it was about learning from a person and gaining a deeper appreciation for the place and culture around me.
