I learned to quilt when I was in grade school, but always felt a little bit intimidated by the precision and techniques. The vibrant and unique quilts of Gee's Bend always resonated with me and I was beyond excited to see that there was a workshop opportunity! I love getting to know different parts of the US through the eyes of locals, and I was excited to learn more about the specific approach and process of Gee's Bend. I could not have had a better time on this workshop. I feel so privileged to have been welcomed into and immersed in the community, and to learn first-hand from these amazing quilters. Such a pinch-me moment! It was honestly really hard to leave, but I have brought my skills and experience home with me and have already got my sewing set-up dialed in. My 6-year-old was inspired by my excitement and is now making his own quilt, too! Beyond the actual techniques that I learned, I feel like this experience really had an impact on my approach to creativity; there is an amazing balance of thoughtfulness and spontaneity (and joy!) that I will carry with me from now on. This experience changed how I see the world.
