My colleague and I attended the workshop with the primary goal of learning traditional Iznik tile painting techniques from an expert craftswoman. Understanding the cultural significance of the art was particularly important to us, as it would allow us to approach it with greater sensitivity to cultural heritage and appropriation concerns. For that purpose, the workshop with Fatma was a perfect match. In addition to learning the fundamentals of Iznik painting, including its historical background and symbolism, we especially experienced a genuine and rare exchange of warmth and openness among all participants. Encountering someone with whom you immediately feel a sense of respect and a potential connection is quite rare and meaningful.
