Meet the Artist

Mie is a Belgian ceramist creating clay sculptures, porcelain vessels and installations for the past 20 years. She explores the dark organic shapes in her stoneware, translucency in porcelain and thoughtful glazes in her work. A world traveler, she has lived and worked in studios in Thailand, Philippines, France, Netherlands and Belgium. Few years ago, Mie bought and renovated an old mansion on the Belgian coast, where she founded a small gallery and studio, and created a space for local artists to collaborate. Being on the coast, she draws her inspiration from the surrounding sea, movement, colors and textures. Hence it's not a surprise that she likes scuba diving and adores the sea world. A getaway working in a ceramic studio steps away from the Belgian coast - we are ready!

I had a wonderful time working with Mie in her beautiful studio. She and I worked with paper slip porcelain and I was able to draw with it, cast with it, and hand build with it. Mie is so knowledgeable. In the mornings I would leave the small village of Houtave and bike to the slightly larger seaside towns. There were many opportunities to find cute cafes for a coffee, reading, and just enjoying t Read more

I had an incredible workshop in Houtave, Belgium with Mie! This studio, in an old country house, is so inspiring! Mie is very good at teaching porcelain techniques and she's very helpful with the projects students have on their mind! Nice spots to explore in the small village.

We had an excellent time with Mie. She was very generous in sharing her different techniques in creating texture and form in ceramics… which was exactly what we had hoped for and more. Each day we agreed what we wanted to explore and Mie was always on hand as we developed our work. We came away with multiple new skills and inspiration. It was an added bonus to see other students work displayed at Read more

Mie was an amazing host. I learned so much during my time at her studio. She was patient funny and always ready to answer questions or demonstrate techniques. She was warm, funny and welcomed me to her house and home. Peter's food was simply delicious and different each day. I would highly recommend a stay with Mie.

We loved our time with Mie in Oostende. Neither of us had any ceramic experience before and Mie was very accommodating and enthusiastic. We got to try many different techniques and came away being very excited about ceramics!

Mie was welcoming and generous with her studio, her home, her time, and her expertise. We had a wonderful experience!

Our group was made up of three hobby ceramicists of varying experience levels and we each learned so much from Mie. She was open with her techniques and was willing to give as much or as little feedback as needed as we worked, and we all brought a wealth of knowledge home with u
