Meet the Artist

Ole is a Norwegian art photographer, a sailor, and a twelfth-generation resident of the tiny car-free island society of Lyngør. He is the twelfth generation in his family to grow up on this island. Ole's father is a sailmaker, his grandfather was a sailor, and as a child Ole rowed to school. Everyday life in Lyngør is closely connected with and influenced by the sea, which provides substance and background for his pictorial experiments.

He spends much of his time boating and trekking around the archipelago in pursuit of images exploring relationship between man and nature. Other times, he is inside one of Europe's few special darkrooms built in his father's sail loft. A pupil of Norway's first photo concept artist Dag Alveng, Ole's works have been exhibited internationally. When you visit him, ask him about the year he spent crossing the Atlantic on a 19th-century pilot cutter.

VAWAA Includes:

  • Boat ride and trekking with medium format cameras in the archipelago surrounding Lyngør.

  • Darkroom printing with baryta/fibre paper.
  • Finalizing prints; retouching, pressing and mounting.

  • Transportation to and from bus/train station in Lyngør.

Stay at Ole's

Stay in Lyngør's former school. Built in 1875, it is the largest building in the island society. It is now owned by a young couple that have single-handedly restored the building to its former glory. The school is located on the island of Holmen, one of the four islands of Lyngør. Holmen is connected to Odden with a bridge, and both offer beautiful trekking opportunities. A one minute walk takes you to the dock, where you can go for a swim in the Northern Sea - maybe preferably after spending some time in the sauna. One of the owners will take you across the sound every day so you can attend your darkroom studio sessions.

Includes 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, a fully equipped kitchen, and a sauna. Breakfast is included on the first day of your stay and you'll have fresh home baked bread every day. Ole will also provide a welcome dinner on your first night and offer lunch during your studio sessions. There is a grocery store nearby for other meals.

Explore Lyngør

Previously, the village of Lyngør was a popular home for sea captains since it is only accessible by boat and it has no cars. The village is well-known for its scenic harbor and charming wooden houses. It is recognized as one of the best-preserved communities in Europe. Most of the buildings are now summer homes, but there are still about seventy-five permanent, year-round residents. The strait that goes through Lyngør is also well known for the dramatic Battle of Lyngør during the Napoleonic Wars, in which the British Royal Navy effectively put an end to the last of Dano-Norwegian naval forces.

This VAWAA is available for a longer duration. If interested in extending your time, let us know by how many days and we will do our best to accommodate you.
