Meet the Artist

Silvia is an artist and academic who practices Ebru Painting, or Turkish Marbling - an art form which dates back to the 16th century Ottoman tradition of book art. In this technique, mineral/herbal paint is applied to the surface of water to create a design that is then mono-printed onto paper. Silvia has studied Ottoman culture, the philosophy of Islam, Sufism and the cultural significance of water in Istanbul for nearly 25 years. This context inspires Silvia’s practice, where she uses classic Ebru techniques to produce contemporary art from her home studio in Istanbul’s tranquil Cengelköy District. In addition to a master marbler, Silvia is an expert on local waterways and loves giving tours of these architectural wonders!

VAWAA Includes:

  • An introduction to the origin of marbling, the connection to Sufi tradition and the special materials used in the technique.
  • Instruction in the entire process of Ebru painting - how to prepare the water/colors, how to transfer designs from water to paper, and how to laminate paintings.
  • Experimenting with different marbling techniques.
  • Visiting a classic marbling artist to experience traditional marbling.
  • Exploring historic waterways in Istanbul and visit a local calligraphy studio.
  • All tools and materials.
  • Turkish tea & snacks at the studio.
  • Your own Ebru painting to take back with you.

Explore Istanbul

At the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Istanbul has a rich culture with distinct elements of Western and Eastern influence. It has witnessed some of the greatest empires in human history, each of which has left an indelible mark, whether it be through ancient ruins, cuisine, religious sites, or art. While its history is epic, however, the true pleasures of Istanbul are in the small, mundane details. Threaded through the city are neighborhoods defined by community, shopkeepers who know every patron, friends drinking tea together outside. It’s these details that always linger with us long after we’ve gone.

This was my first VAWAA experience, and I didn't know what to expect - either from incorporating art into a trip or from Ebru painting, and I was blown away. Silvia was not only a gracious host, but a patient, thorough, and encouraging instructor and her love for her art and for sharing it with others was palpable and truly lovely.

I thoroughly enjoyed learning not just Ebru painting and vario

The week I spent with Silvia, will be engraved for ever in my memory. Silvia is not only a kind hearted human being, with immense knowledge on her craft but also an afficionado of learning for life, always experimenting with new ways to work with Ebru (and not only).

The generous way she shared her knowledge, studio, supplies, home (and a lot of hearty meals) is truly humbling. 8 days were not

I could not recommend this stay more highly. During my residency I had the opportunity to learn and practice Turkish Marbling thoroughly, as well as gaining important understanding of the mysticism and philosophy which surround this ancient art form. In her serene and calm manner Silvia guided me through all levels artistically and spiritually to attain a most satisfactory level of proficiency.
