What a great way to travel and experience a new country! I had the best time in Montevideo, Uruguay, studying woodturning with Mauricio each morning and exploring local culture and sites each afternoon and LATE into the evening (man, do those South Americans eat dinner late!). Mauricio’s studio, located in a chill neighborhood away from the city, tells the story of someone undoubtedly dedicated to their craft. He has converted the main floor of his family home into studio space – a small showroom, workrooms, and climatized wood storage. The primary lathe sits proudly in an out building in the backyard, where we stayed focus on the tasks at hand – learning about tools, blank preparation, spindle turning, wood species, mounting strategies, and ultimately bowl turning and finishing techniques. I feel so lucky to have been able to spend time with such an accomplished turner.
