I wanted to have a unique experience of a place, while also having something to do. Julio's VAWAA appealed to me because it seemed accessible even for someone without any stone carving or art experience. And it was! I particularly wanted to understand the end-to-end process of making a stone sculpture. I will never look at stone the same way. Now that I know the feeling of chiseling stone, polishing it, cutting it — I have a visceral understanding of stone sculpture. And a more informed knowledge of different types of stone and their qualities. It's almost like learning a new language. I can read sculpture and the built environment in a new way.
