My experience with Kees was incredible and I am so grateful for the time spent together. Umecuaro is the most idyllic and beautiful backdrop for a creative adventure. His studio and home is a piece of art itself - intentionally and beautifully designed, where you feel completely immersed in nature and art. Every corner, the space pulls you in to discover everything from stone carving, to woodwork, to multiple ceramics kilns, to an outdoor sculpture garden, to a gallery of rotating pieces from Kees and his wife Carmen’s work as well as work from their friends/other artist residents’. Kees and his wife were both so generous and excited to answer all my curious questions about art, their lives, their processes - I loved getting to know them. In the evenings after our day of Land Art, I found myself continuing to learn and play, as they taught me weaving, embroidery and ceramics over evening chats by the fireplace.
