I'd been looking for indigenous basket weaving for some time. Caught in the crosshairs of a number of my interests; I'd been reading on ecological regeneration, indigenous art and democratic practices. I also studied textiles in college and wanted to get back to a craft I enjoyed immensely. Everything came together when I found Nancy and VAWAA on a google search. I needed time away, a vacation of my own and the meditation and focus of a craft that I'd been hoping to get back to. It was very serendipitous finding Nancy. Her stories were far greater than anything I might find in a book or from a google search.
It's hard to come away from something like this without having a deeper more meaningful experience. On the level of spending focused time together, creating, talking, educating & exchanging, we find connection. This is meaningful in a much broader sense. But I also am back at making baskets with more knowledge and better baskets in my future, which is very cool as well.
